A Midsummer
Night’s Dream
This version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is not set in any particular time or location, but is heavily influenced by both historical and contemporary styles from Europe, North America, Japan, and India. The Mechanicals (except for Bottom) and Royals stand in contrast to the Fairies, while the Lovers and Bottom hit somewhere in between. The Fairies are marked by long, flowing, chiffon-like fabrics and have silhouettes inspired by Victorian menswear as well as different kinds of bugs and flowers, while the Mechanicals resemble working class 1930s men with heavy woven fabrics. The Royals are similarly heavy, but dressed in elaborate brocades and slightly modernized 19th century formal wear. The Lovers have some of the brocades of their parents, but their silhouettes are much looser and lighter – evoking the influence of the Fairies in their lives.
