Leighton Stanfill

As a multidisciplinary artist and researcher, my work spans the fields of fashion design, installation art, filmmaking, dance, and gesture research. I am inspired by the human body in all of its forms - how do we dress it? move it? understand it? How do we create meaning for ourselves, and how is that meaning understood by those around us?

In working across many media, I am able to transfer the techniques of one to the experience of the other. In my work, I explore their relationships, asking questions like: How can we use 3D printing to paint? How can a dancer’s movement become data for animation?

My linguistics research focuses on gesture and how we can use animation to change and augment the meaning of our gestures. I explore the construction of meaning beyond what we have access to in our day-to-day, physical lives. How do we convey meaning in cartoons? What happens once we remove the boundaries of physical limitations?

My practice is one of questions and of exploration. I am driven by a deep commitment to quality and detail, and I strive to create art that explores the relationships between media and their modes of thought. I love to make things, and I’m excited to explore what the next thing might be.
